Birmingham City v Aston Villa: Rob Hawthorne, Alan Smith remember the first Premier League derby in Birmingham

Aston Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman
Aston Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman's calamitous error gave Birmingham a second goal in the September 2002 derby

To the blue side of Birmingham, September 16, 2002 brings back the happiest of memories.

To the other half of the second city, it was a grim Monday evening, a night where just about everything went wrong for Aston Villa fans, their manager Graham Taylor, and their star-crossed goalkeeper Peter Enckelman.

To those outside of Birmingham, it put a ferocious rivalry on the national map.

Birmingham City were led back to the top flight by Steve Bruce after a 16-year absence and faced Aston Villa in only their third home game of the season. The rivalry goes back to the 1870s, and though the decade-and-a-half absence of a league game meant battles on the pitch were rare, no love was lost between the two sides.

It was kept alive by the likes of Paul Tait, the Birmingham City midfielder who revealed a T-shirt __with an expletive aimed at Villa after scoring the winner in the 1995 EFL Trophy final at Wembley against Carlisle, and also by Villa's relative failure to push on and cement themselves in English football's top few clubs despite knocking on the door throughout the 1990s.

The clubs were kept close, and when Birmingham finally gained promotion __with a penalty shoot-out victory over Norwich in Cardiff, this was the first fixture every fan of both sides looked out for.

Despite going into the game as underdogs, the Blues were 3-0 winners in a game that saw some over-exuberant crowd celebrations and one of the worst goalkeeping mistakes in Premier League history.

The return fixture in March at Villa Park was equally eventful, producing another goalkeeping calamity, more crowd trouble and an infamous Dion Dublin headbutt on Robbie Savage.

Commentator Rob Hawthorne was present both nights with Sky Sports alongside Alan Smith, and despite both growing up in the Midlands, the ferocity was still surprising.

"There was an intense build-up to the first match, and these types of games are quite difficult to prepare for as a commentator," Hawthorne said. "You can research the history right down to every single previous fixture, but you're aware that this particular game is creating history.

"There are certain things that are going to happen that you can't predict and the Enckelman incident was one of them."

"There was a moment where Alan and I looked at each other and thought, 'Did what we think has just happened actually just happen?'

"It was such an innocuous situation. Suddenly, I was faced with thinking, 'Who do I give this goal to?' Eventually it went down as an own goal, but I didn't know who to give the credit to.

"What gave the game away for Enckelman was that he put his hands on his head, even though we weren't 100 per cent sure he touched it, and as Graham Taylor said after the game, we weren't sure Enckelman even knew what the rules were.

"Then there was the idiot who ran on the pitch and gestured to Enckelman, and I'm thinking, 'Should I refer to this? Should I not?' because I don't want to give this guy any publicity."

Smith, born seven miles away from St Andrews, added: "I remember it as being very, very feisty. From a commentator's point of view, you see the throw-in going back to Enckelman, and you're half-turning your head up the field to see what's going on up the pitch.

"Then you hear the crowd, quickly turn back, and see it roll under his foot and into the net. An amazing moment, I couldn't quite believe it.

"The fan ran onto the pitch and teased Enckelman, who kept very cool, I must say."

That night in September went down in folklore among Birmingham fans, and a chant to celebrate the memory to the tune of The Four Seasons' "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" was quickly thought up.

"For that period of the early to mid-00s, it was one of the fiercest games I'd covered," Hawthorne said.

"It was a completely mad, mad night. The other goals are almost obliterated by the memory of Enckelman. It was just so bizarre and so unexpected. The goal absolutely floored Villa. It was manic.

"I'd been aware in the build-up that the West Midlands police had put extra numbers out, but it did feel particularly toxic on that September night, especially with the game being at St Andrews.

"I think Birmingham have probably felt they've always been treated as the poor relations of the second city, by the fact that traditionally Villa have been the most successful of the two neighbours."

Six months later, three miles across the city at Villa Park, the return fixture was arguably even more eventful. In another night game in front of the Sky Sports cameras, Birmingham ran out 2-0 winners this time, thanks in part to another shocking error from Enckelman to allow Geoff Horsfield to score at the Holte End.

Dublin was sent off, banned and fined for his heabutt on Savage. Cristophe Dugarry was fined for spitting in the direction of Joey Gudjonsson, who himself was sent off for a nasty two-footed lunge on Matthew Upson.

Dublin branded Savage a cheat, the crowd problems continued with over 40 arrests, while Taylor turned on his heels in his post-match interview with Sky Sports, choosing to do his talking in the dressing room and not to camera.

"Next up in March 2003 at Villa Park, it was just as poisonous," Hawthorne said. "It had everything. The preparation for this game was slightly different. Bearing in mind all the scars left from the September game, you expected all the rough and tumble.

"It was one of those games again where you felt you needed your eyes and ears as much for what was going on off the ball as on the ball.  It was one of those games where you needed to be at maximum concentration level. You can't afford to be looking down at your notes all the time.

"People were storming on the pitch, and we had shots on supporters in the stand with their faces covered so they couldn't be traced."

Smith added: "The return game in March was a very hot atmosphere, very lively. It was buzzing that night. Dion Dublin just lost it, just got wound up, and that's what derbies can do to you."

Lee Hendrie, on the bench for the first game, played the full 90 minutes at Villa Park, and remembers the incident with Dublin and Savage well, revealing that he and the former Villa striker still discuss the game.

The Villa fan and former midfielder also insists the 'second city derby' is up there with the fiercest in the country.

"Sav was obviously a wind-up merchant back in his day. I still speak to Dion about it, I know it still winds him up because of the way the situation was and the way he got sent off in such a massive game.

"The derby games stand out a mile for me, especially being a Brummy lad, it's pride of the city. They talk about the Wolves and West Brom games, but this is the big clash.

Dublin leaves the pitch after being sent off

"You look at the big derbies around, the Manchester derby and others, I still don't think they come close to this."

The two sides have met 14 times since, but on Sunday they face off in the second tier for the first time since 1987, live on Sky Sports 2 HD, where the Birmingham fans will be looking to build on a six-point lead over their rivals.

Just another match? Smith, who played in tens of north London derbies with Arsenal, knows from experience that the atmosphere at a sold-out St Andrews will have an impact on the players.

"Derbies are definitely not just another game. It is a cliche, but derbies are levellers. Form does tend to go out of the window. The atmosphere in the crowd does transmit itself to the players.

"They're the only clubs in Birmingham. Obviously, Birmingham have lived in Villa's shadow in terms of the size of the club and the trophies they've won, so it's always special when Blues win and they don't hesitate to rub it in."

Serie A round-up: Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain nets winner against Napoli

Gonzalo Higuain's second-half winner saw Juventus clinch their 22nd consecutive home win in Serie A __with a 2-1 victory over Napoli.

Argentina international Higuain, sold by Napoli to Juve for £75m in the summer, scored in the 70th minute after visiting striker Jose Callejon had cancelled out Leonardo Bonucci's spectacular volley for the home side early in the second half.

Juve's last Serie A defeat on home soil was on the opening day of the 2015/16 season, against Udinese, but they were pushed all the way by Napoli, who began the day in third place, four points adrift of Massimiliano Allegri's leaders.

Juventus, who bounced back from last Saturday's 1-0 defeat at AC Milan by beating Sampdoria 4-1 in midweek, were not at their fluent best during the first period, in which Napoli enjoyed the lion's share of possession.

But the home side still carved out the better chances. Stephan Lichsteiner blazed his shot from inside the penalty area over the crossbar and Higuain was denied by Vlad Chiriches' brilliant last-ditch tackle when poised to shoot from in front of goal in the 24th minute.

Napoli, who kicked off four points behind Juve in third place following their midweek win over Empoli, fell behind to Bonucci's thumping finish five minutes into the second half.

When Napoli made a mess of clearing a corner, the ball spun back into the path of Bonucci and the Italy international lashed home his first goal of the season in spectacular fashion beyond a motionless Pepe Reina.

Maurizio Sarri's side, who had won their previous two league games, were not behind for long. Lorenzo Insigne's fine ball over the top caught the Juve defence flat-footed and Spaniard Callejon showed fine composure to side-foot the ball underneath Gianluigi Buffon for his seventh goal of the season.

Juve midfielder Hernanes blazed a shot off target when well-placed on the edge of the box, but the home side regained the lead in the 70th minute when Higuain latched on to a rebound just inside the area and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.

It was his first goal against his former club since Juve triggered his release clause in his Napoli contract in July and his eighth of the season, while his celebrations were respectfully muted.

Napoli almost responded __with another quick equaliser, but Dries Mertens' shot from the edge of the area was just off target.

Higuain threatened again with a header in the 82nd minute and Juve were content to see out the remainder of the match, restricting Napoli to long-range efforts from Amadou Diawara and Piotr Zielinski.

Elsewhere, Fiorentina saw off 10-man Bologna to secure a 1-0 win and extend their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions, thanks to Nikola Kalinic's first-half penalty.

Bologna were a man down for an hour after defender Daniele Gastaldello had been shown a straight red card for hauling down former Blackburn striker Kalinic, who picked himself up to place his 31st-minute spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew aims to address defensive issues

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew said he will work on defensive issues __with his side after their 4-2 defeat to Liverpool.

The Eagles twice got themselves level __with their visitors in a thrilling game at Selhurst Park, and went behind in the 16th minute after Emre Can's shot deflected into the net off captain Scott Dann.

But James McArthur got the hosts level two minutes later after he took advantage of Liverpool's own defensive mishap, before Dejan Lovren put the Reds back ahead not long after.

Midfielder McArthur was there again to equalise for Palace, but they were dealt another blow just before the break as Joel Matip headed home his first Liverpool goal.

Roberto Firmino rounded off the scoring for an impressive Reds outfit in the second half, and Pardew has identified some defensive mistakes to work on before next weekend's meeting with Burnley.

"It was a bit too open for us against a side as good as they were. They kept wriggling out of situations with some brilliant technical play at times but we didn't start as I would have liked," Pardew said.

"We didn't have enough pressure at the top of the pitch and their two centre-halves had too much time, and then we were defending in the last third where they're as good as anyone.

"It was a very difficult half for us but to concede two set plays is unusual for us, and that's something we need to address.

"Sometimes its difficult on the sideline or in the press box to feel what the players are sensing out there, and some of their play was so quick and fast it got us in a negative mindset. We addressed that at half-time and we were a lot higher up the pitch, did a lot better and put the goalie under pressure as we had a lot of opportunities at 3-2.

"McArthur was exceptional today and he didn't deserve to be on the losing team. He scored two goals and his energy level was a positive force for us today.

"However, the back four needs a bit of work and that's something we'll focus on this week."

Crystal Palace remain in 12th place after their third consecutive defeat, but Liverpool have moved level on points with Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table and Pardew believes they will be close to lifting the trophy at the end of the season.

"They're certainly going to be close. Their two centre halves were terrific today. They took on the challenge of Christian [Benteke] and he had his hands full dealing with those two. That was a really interesting battle because that's an area where Liverpool have not been strong."

Eredivisie round-up: Ajax keep pace with Feynoord after Excelsior win

Ajax
Ajax's players have moved within two points of Eredivise leaders Feyenoord

Hakim Ziyech's second-half goal proved enough as Ajax edged Excelsior __with a 1-0 win at the Amsterdam ArenA to keep the pressure on Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord.

The 23-year-old Morocco midfielder fired Kasper Dolberg's cross home three minutes after the break to extend his side's undefeated league run to eight games to remain second, two points behind the leaders.

Reigning champions PSV Eindhoven moved into third after a 2-0 victory at Vitesse thanks to a brace from Gaston Pereiro, who took his season tally to five.

Willem II claimed a much-needed 2-1 triumph over Groningen to move off the bottom of the table and up to 13th as goals from Thom Haye and Bartholomew Ogbeche sandwiched Mimoun Mahi's equaliser.

Elsewhere, Sparta Rotterdam and Heracles shared the spoils from a topsy-turvy match at Polman Stadion after Zakaria El Azzouzi put visitors Rotterdam ahead.

Brahim Darri and Brandley Kuwas turned the tide in Heracles' favour before a late equaliser from Loris Brogno earned a point.

Alexis Sanchez scored a superb header to round off a 22-pass move from Arsenal in their 4-1 win over Sunderland.

Every Arsenal player touched the ball apart from Alex Iwobi as the Gunners worked their way through the Sunderland defence.

The decisive pass came though as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain burst past Duncan Watmore on the right flank before firing across a dangerous cross into the Sunderland penalty area.

David Moyes's side briefly threatened to halt Arsenal's march towards three points, with Jermain Defoe converting from the spot after Watmore was tripped by Petr Cech.

However, three goals in eight minutes scored by substitute Olivier Giroud and Sanchez, who grabbed his 50th Arsenal goal, sealed Arsene Wenger's side's victory at the Stadium of Light.

Slavev Bilic admits he smelled complacency at West Ham in pre-season

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic speaks exclusively to Sky Sports
West Ham boss Slaven Bilic speaks exclusively to Sky Sports' Geoff Shreeves

Slaven Bilic has admitted that he "smelled complacency" at West Ham ahead of the club's disappointing start to the new campaign.

The Croatian's first season in charge was a successful one __with the club qualifying for Europe after a seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

But following the move from Upton Park to the London Stadium last summer, results suffered as West Ham lost five of their first six league matches.

The slide has been arrested as they have gone unbeaten in October and reached the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, but Bilic said expectations were too high at the start of this season and focus slightly slipped as a result.

"We got a bit of that complacency," he told Sky Sports' Geoff Shreeves.

"I smelled it. I didn't know and at the end of the day I am the first to say that it is my responsibility, always, because I am the manager here.

"I smelled it during the pre-season when I spoke to the press. You have press conferences even in pre-season and before our qualification games for Europa League and 70 per cent of the questions were about Champions League.

"'What are you talking about?' was in my head. On one hand you don't want to be pessimistic, but on the other hand - and I was talking about it to my staff - if they are asking me those kind of questions they are asking the players the same kind of questions.

"What is the reason? We are not afraid of anyone, but why are we talking about Champions League?

"We played at home against Watford and in a pre-match interview I was asked 'are you thinking of an easy 3-0 win?' and I was like 'What are you talking about?'

"This is the Premier League and we are West Ham. Nobody can talk about an easy 3-0 win. We are hoping and sometimes you are expecting if everything goes well, but those kind of things got us in a state of a little bit of complacency.

"You don't do it deliberately. You don't even notice, but it comes. Just five per cent is enough here, __with a little bit of bad luck… to get you in serious problems.

"Thank god we reacted well and on time."

West Ham travel to Everton on Super Sunday on the back of Premier League victories over Crystal Palace and Sunderland and a midweek EFL Cup win over Chelsea.

Bilic is hoping for three points to see them continue their rise up the table and agreed with the suggestion that they exceeded expectations last year.

"On one hand I agree with you," he added.

"We are the victims of our own success, but what should we have done?

"Lose a few games once we are safe? Then it wouldn't be a great season, it would be ok, and we would be on our toes? No.

"We are not the first and we are not the last team to be a victim of its own success.

"We are a club that is moving places. We have a new stadium. The board and the whole West Ham family is trying to move this club to another level."
