Harry Kane says Dele Alli will learn lesson after red card in Gent defeat

Harry Kane insists Dele Alli has learned a lesson after being sent off for his reckless tackle in the Europa League.

Tottenham crashed out to Gent in the last 32 on Thursday after a 2-2 draw at Wembley ensured the Belgian side went through 3-2 on aggregate.

Alli was the villain of the piece as his red card for a horror challenge on Gent's Brecht Dejaegere at 1-1 left Tottenham needing to score twice __with 10 men.

"Dele will learn from this," Kane said. "Obviously in European football when tackles like that go in you are more likely to get a red card.

"He is obviously gutted and feels like he has let us down a bit but Dele has been great for us this season. We fought hard for him to turn it around.

"It is something he will learn from and get experience from for the future."

Alli's tackle was high and dangerous, spearing his studs just below Dejaegere's knee, but the Belgian felt no bitterness after the match.

"Dele Alli just said sorry to me and that's nice from him, he's a professional," Dejaegere said.

"We're okay, it's football. I saw the images and it could have been much worse. I don't think he meant it because he came to apologise himself."

Dejaegere was able to continue initially but had to be substituted in the 56th minute when the pain in his knee became more acute.

"The red card made a big difference," Dejaegere said. "Even __with 10 they found a free man but with 11 they would have had even one more. I think it also made a difference in the heads of the players."

Christian Eriksen's opener and an own goal from Kane meant the game hung in the balance when Alli was given his marching orders by referee Manuel De Sousa.

Victor Wanyama's superb second-half strike gave Tottenham hope but Jeremy Perbet's late goal on the break sealed Gent a 2-2 draw and 3-2 win on aggregate.

Alli had cut a frustrated figure in the first half and his challenge appeared an expression of anger, after he had been denied a free-kick moments before.

Toby Alderweireld said the 20-year-old had apologised to his Tottenham team-mates.

"Of course he said sorry. He didn't mean to get sent off," Alderweireld said.

"Two seconds before someone made a foul on him and he reacted to that but he did not want to get a red card. He is young and I know for 100 per cent he didn't mean [to do it]."

Sean Dyche thrilled with Joey Barton impact on return to Burnley

Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood has praised his teammate Joey Barton for helping to create a feeling of togetherness in their squad
Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood has praised his teammate Joey Barton for helping to create a feeling of togetherness in their squad

Sean Dyche has downplayed Joey Barton's antics during Burnley's shock 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Lincoln City as "pantomime stuff".

And he insists he will be content if that is the extent of the controversy the former England international courts in his second spell at Turf Moor.

Barton's run-in __with Lincoln striker Matt Rhead, which saw him stand on the non-league striker's foot before hitting the deck as he ran into his opponent's arm, was widely derided.

However, Dyche has brushed off the incident regarding a player who has previously spent time in jail, and served lengthy suspensions in the game for altercations __with both team-mates and opponents.

"I think it's pantomime stuff, myself," Dyche said. "I've got to be honest, I've seen a lot more controversy around Joey than that. If that's as far as it goes, I'll be a happy man.

"I thought by a mile, by an absolute mile, he was the best player on the pitch last weekend, and I mean by a long margin - on both teams.

"That's just part of being Joey, I suppose. It could be a TV series, actually - Being Joey.

"It's just the way life is now - people should actually have been saying, 'What about the game? What about him?'

"He was so far in front of everyone else on the pitch, it was incredible to look at. I really thought that and I thought he was against Leicester as well. He was absolutely outstanding.

"Chelsea have two unbelievably high-quality midfielders, and I thought Joey more than dealt with what he needed to deal with. I think he's been fantastic for us."

Barton - who started the season with a disappointing spell at Rangers - still faces potential sanctions for the charge he was issued with in December having allegedly made over 1,000 bets across 10 years.

Dyche says he
Dyche says he'll be happy if Barton's antics against Lincoln are as controversial as his second stint at Burnley gets

Yet even with that prospect, Dyche still re-signed Barton in the new year, having been impressed by the much-maligned midfielder during last season's promotion campaign.

He added: "I've only really spoken about his time with me and Burnley. I've never really commented on his time away from us, that's a whole different thing.

"Myself, my staff, the team, the players here, Burnley Football Club, then...not a question mark for me.

"I think when he came down (after Rangers) he felt he had something to offer because he knew more about how we work here.

"He was willing to do the work to get ready to have a chance, rather than get the chance to get ready, fitness-wise and stuff like that.

"So when he did come in, he was ready. He's always ready mentally, Joey, but he was ready physically. You can see that."

Inverness CT 2-1 Rangers: Billy Mckay winner heaps more pressure on Gers

Billy Mckay
Billy Mckay's second goal of his second spell at Inverness gave them victory over Rangers

Inverness moved off the bottom of the Scottish Premiership as they piled more pressure on Rangers __with a dramatic 2-1 win over the Ibrox club.

Greg Tansey gave the Highlanders a first-half lead but Martyn Waghorn's penalty equaliser looked to have secured a point apiece.

But after Iain Vigurs' late penalty was saved by Wes Foderingham, Billy Mckay's spectacular overhead kick a minute from the end gave Inverness just their fourth league win of the season.

For Rangers, the turmoil in the aftermath of Mark Warburton's departure two weeks ago goes on and they have now taken just five points from their last possible 21.

Under caretaker manager Graeme Murty, they now face the possibility of falling nine points behind second-top Aberdeen on Saturday - and a massive 33 behind their Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Sorely in need of a win to spark their season back to life, the visitors began brightly and Kenny Miller, Emerson Hyndman and Barrie McKay all had early attempts saved.

Inverness have also been out of sorts lately - winning only once in their last 16 games in all competitions before this one - and they sat deep at first.

They eventually came forward, however, and Jake Mulraney's drive was briefly on target before it deflected wide for a corner.

The fact both teams have been struggling magnified their requirements for a win and that made for an open contest.

James Tavernier cut out Tansey's loose pass and fed Miller before going for the return, only to see the striker take on a long-range attempt and fire well over.

As has often been the case this season, Rangers saw plenty of the ball at times but lacked enough penetration in key areas.

Indeed, when they did catch sight of goal again they were not nearly sharp enough, __with McKay heading glaringly over after a pinpoint Lee Wallace cross.

Waghorn then took aim as the break approached, curling a couple of yards wide from the edge of the area.

Mckay nearly made him pay for that, with some last-ditch Danny Wilson defending just enough to keep him out on two occasions.

Tansey was more successful, however, as he bent in from 25 yards past the unsighted Foderingham when Liam Polworth's shot was blocked.

It was the 12th time in 26 Premiership games Rangers had gone behind first and they needed a reaction after the restart.

Yet they were slow to respond, with Miller's cross-cum-shot which lifted over the upright their best offering for a while.

Hyndman and Tavernier were then denied in quick succession before Owain Fon Williams produced a good save to tip over from McKay.

For the first time, Rangers looked like a threat in the final third but Jon Toral snatched a shot across goal and off the edge of the post when it seemed he would finally draw them level.

At last, their pressure did pay off as Wallace was hacked down in the area as Louis Laing and Waghorn converted the resulting penalty to a defiant roar from the away support.

Suddenly at risk of being overrun, Inverness almost went in front again when Foderingham pushed away a rasping Tansey volley.

Waghorn, Hyndman and Tavernier all missed chances to win it for the visitors before Vigurs was kept out from the spot after Mckay was fouled by Danny Wilson.

The Northern Ireland cap has the final say though, sending his scissor kick soaring past Foderingham from close range to take Inverness past Hamilton in the table.

Mickael Le Bihan leads Nice past Montpellier while Nantes beat Dijon

Nice came from behind to beat Montpellier 2-1 on Friday and move level on points __with Ligue 1 leaders Monaco.

Montpellier made the trip across the south coast having won three of their last four matches and they made a great start when Steve Mounie put them ahead after nine minutes.

But Nice are strong at home, undefeated domestically this season at the Allianz Riviera, and turned the tables in the second half through two goals from Mickael Le Bihan.

The striker, making a rare start, levelled things up in the 68th minute and struck again five minutes from time to win the match and move Nice up to second in the table behind Monaco - who travel to Guingamp on Saturday - on goal difference.

Dijon continue to look over their shoulder towards the bottom of the table after losing 3-1 at Nantes in Friday's other game.

Yacine Bammou put the hosts ahead after just three minutes but the strugglers were thrown a lifeline shortly before half-time when Leo Dubois flicked the ball into his own net.

Goalkeeper Baptiste Reynet kept Dijon in it as long as he could but he could do little to prevent Nantes taking the lead just before the hour as Emiliano Sala blasted home a penalty.

Felipe Pardo curled in a superb third goal to seal the win after 79 minutes before Lois Diony's red card __with five minutes remaining completed a miserable evening for the visitors.

Real Sociedad maintained their push for a top-four spot in La Liga __with a 1-0 win at Las Palmas on Friday.

The visitors took advantage of a horrendous goalkeeping mistake to move a point behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid, who host Barcelona on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

The game in Gran Canaria looked to be heading for a goalless stalemate until, 16 minutes from time, Las Palmas goalkeeper Javi Varas inexplicably passed the ball straight to Sociedad midfielder Xabi Prieto on the edge of the box.

Prieto took one touch and, __with Varas out of position to the right of his goal, he had the simplest of tasks to slot into an unguarded net.

That consigned unlucky Las Palmas to a fourth successive La Liga defeat and saw Sociedad move to within a point of fourth-placed Atletico, who play Barcelona on Sunday.

Wolfsburg 1-2 Werder Bremen: Serge Gnabry double secures win

Serge Gnabry scored twice as Werder Bremen climbed out of the relegation play-off spot __with a 2-1 Bundesliga victory at fellow strugglers Wolfsburg on Friday.

The Germany international, who joined Bremen from Arsenal last summer, opened the scoring __with a deflected strike from inside the penalty area after 10 minutes.

He then grabbed his second goal eight minutes later, controlling a flick-on from a free-kick on his chest six yards out and volleying the ball home.

Borja Mayoral reduced the deficit back to a single goal a minute later when he bundled the ball in from close range with his chest following a corner.

Wolfsburg should have rescued at least a point as both Daniel Didavi and Mayoral saw efforts hit a post, while visiting goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald made a string of saves.

Bremen move up to 15th in the table, with Wolfsburg one place above them on goal difference.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich are in action on Saturday when they host Hamburg, while second-placed RB Leipzig are at home to Cologne.

WATCH: Birmingham's Paul Robinson sent off against Wolves

Birmingham
Birmingham's Paul Robinson was sent off after appearing to throw a punch

Paul Robinson was controversially sent off during Birmingham's 2-1 win over Wolves on Friday evening.

The Blues looked to be in control of the Sky Bet Championship contest at Molineux after first-half goals from Maikel Kieftenbeld and David Davis.

But they had to survive a late spell of pressure after being reduced to 10 men in the 53rd minute when Robinson was shown a straight red card.

The defender, 38, appeared to hit out at Jon Dadi Bodvarsson after sliding in on the Iceland international on the right touchline.

After consulting __with his assistant, the referee showed Robinson the 11th red card of his career on his 750th appearance.

Fortunately for the defender it did not cost his side any points as they held out for a 2-1 win to ease the pressure on manager Gianfranco Zola.

"I think it was a little bit harsh," Zola told Sky Sports when asked about the red card. "Because Robinson told me the man was grabbing his back and he just wanted to push his hand off. We'll have a look at it and see if we need to take action."
