Zlatan Ibrahimovic has confirmed that he does in fact “try” during Manchester United matches.
The Swede is enduring a difficult run of form, having scored just one goal in his last 11 appearances.
He came on as a first-half substitute in the Europa League group game against Fenerbahce on Thursday, but United slipped to a 2-1 defeat.
Ibrahimovic scored five goals in his first five games since joining the club in the summer, but has now scored just once since September 10 – against Zorya Luhansk.
Speaking after the game, the 35-year-old offered a delightful verdict on his performance.
“I come in and try,” he told his official website. “We’re chasing goals the whole time, so it didn’t turn out like the match we anticipated.”
The retired Sweden international caused controversy during the game in Turkey when he grabbed the throat of defender Simon Kjaer before whispering something in his ear.
Some outlets claim he could face a charge over the confrontation, but the forward described the incident as “nothing special”.
